In many industries, surface preparation quality directly determines the success of coating, welding, or bonding processes. Among the key parameters, surface roughness (Ra) plays a vital role in ensuring adhesion strength and corrosion resistance.
To verify the performance of our equipment, Rayno Laser conducted a detailed roughness test using our latest 6kW continuous-wave (CW) laser cleaning machine.
Test Overview
The test was designed to evaluate the surface roughness after laser cleaning on two common industrial metals: stainless steel and carbon steel. All tests were performed using Rayno’s 6 kW single-axis laser cleaning system, under stable process parameters and controlled laboratory conditions.
Equipment Used:
- Model: Rayno 6 kW CW Laser Cleaning Machine (Single-Axis Type)
- Laser Type: Continuous Wave Fiber Laser
- Test Materials: Stainless Steel 304 / Carbon Steel Q235
- Measurement Tool: Surface Roughness Tester (Ra)
- Reference Standards: ISO 8501-1 / NACE No. 2 / SSPC-SP 10 (Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning)
Test Results
| Material | Measured Surface Roughness (Ra) | Equivalent Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless Steel | 20–40 μm | Comparable to SP 10 (Near-White Metal) finish |
| Carbon Steel | 70–120 μm | Comparable to SP 10 / Sa 2.5 heavy blast profile |
The results show that the laser-cleaned surfaces achieve a micro-roughness level suitable for coating and welding preparation, meeting industrial standards typically achieved by grit blasting.
The stainless steel surface remains smooth and bright with uniform texture, while carbon steel surfaces exhibit higher roughness ideal for paint adhesion or anti-corrosion coatings.
Why Surface Roughness Matters
Proper surface roughness ensures:
- Improved coating adhesion
- Reduced risk of peeling or delamination
- Better welding quality through clean and oxide-free surfaces
- Extended corrosion resistance in harsh environments
Traditional abrasive blasting achieves similar results, but laser cleaning provides a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally friendly process—with no consumables, no secondary waste, and precise control of roughness by adjusting laser power and scanning speed.
